T/S Gunilla - 201' Swedish tall ship training vessel
The square-rigged barque Gunilla was originally launched as a cargo vessel at the Oskarshamn Shipyard in 1940 of pre-war, top-quality steel and she navigated Swedish waters until 1997. Today, the ship is chartered by "Den Seglande Gymnasieskolan" (The Sailing Upper-Secondary School) for a greater part of the season.

The centerpiece of Chesapeake Flotilla Sea Scouts' training program is the Sea Scout Training Vessel (SSTV) "der PeLiKan", a 46 ft. Morgan Ketch.

Afloat Lab - 108' Office of Naval Research vessel
The Afloat Lab is a test platform for new technologies intended for shipboard use. Formerly classified as a Yard Patrol craft and used to train midshipmen, the Afloat Lab has the same machinery, electronics and navigation systems as the Navy's large fleet ships which makes it an ideal test platform.

The vessel provides a realistic shipboard environment for an innovative self-healing communications network that can route around breaks and allows critical shipboard systems to keep functioning. The Afloat Lab takes its nickname, the "Starfish," for this technology because it functions like a real starfish which relies on radial nerves running the length of each ray and connecting to other radial nerves via a nerve ringing the body. In addition to this namesake technology, the Afloat Lab features other working demonstrations and exhibits to give visitors a sample of cutting edge Navy science and technology.

Bay Hydrographer - 56' NOAA hydrographic survey vessel
NOAA S/V BAY HYDROGRAPHER is operated by the Hydrographic Surveys Division of NOAA's Office of Coast Survey. She is based in Norfolk, VA, at the Atlantic Marine Center and she conducts hydrographic survey operations in the Chesapeake Bay. The Ship specializes in multi-beam sonar, side-scan sonar and diver investigation of submerged wrecks and obstructions to navigation for the update of nautical charts. In addition, BAY HYDROGRAPHER serves as a testing and development platform for NOAA's Nautical Charting Laboratory in Silver Spring, MD. and is equipped with state-of-the-art hydrographic and navigation equipment including Differential Global Positioning Systems (DGPS), a Multibeam Bathymetric Sonar System and a digital Side Scan sonar (SSS) system.

Seaclusion - 60' youth education training vessel
This 49 passenger, 60-foot motor yacht previously journeyed both offshore and inland along the entire East Coast from Cuba to Canada. Now part of the Chesapeake Bay Children's Gateway, it serves as a "floating classroom" for Chesapeake Bay Memories Charities.

Steam Tug Baltimore - 89' historic steam tugboat
This national historic landmark, launched in 1906, is the oldest steam-powered, coal-fired tug. Salvaged from the Chesapeake Bay in 1981 and restored by volunteers, it is now part of the Baltimore Museum of Industry

One of the 949th Transportation Company's three 60-foot tugboats, this U.S. Army Small Tugboat is an Army Tug ST-912.

Linthicum - 45' US Army Corps of Engineers survey vessel
The Baltimore District's bay and ocean-going hydrographic survey boat is mainly used to survey deep draft navigation channels and harbors. The 45-foot aluminum vessel reaches a top speed of sixteen knots.

Schooner SultanaSchooner Sultana - 97' topsail schooner from Chestertown, MD
The Schooner Sultana is an undertaking of Sultana Projects. Inc., a non-profit, 501(3)(c) organization based in Chestertown, Maryland. Founded in 1997, Sultana's mission is to provide unique, hands-on educational experiences in colonial history and environmental science.

Snow Goose - 46' Chesapeake Bay Foundation vessel
A "living classroom" for almost 3,500 Maryland students a year, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's environmental education work boat is a 46-foot motor vessel that demonstrates how the Patapsco River is an important economic and ecological resource.

Jeanie Johnston - 148' Irish tall ship
Jeanie Johnston is a recreation of an Irish tall ship that, between 1848 and 1855, made 16 voyages to North America, sailing to Quebec, Baltimore and New York. She carried over 2,500 Irish people across the Atlantic on the first step in a brave new adventure.

This Jeanie Johnston is newly bui t and on her maiden voyage to North American. Her mission is to educate visitors about the history of Ireland, in particular emigration during the Irish famine period.

T/V Kings Pointer - 225' US Merchant Marine training vessel
The T/V Kings Pointer was transferred to the United States Merchant Marine Academy on 1 October 1992, following a distinguished eight year career with the Military Sealift Command. Originally commissioned as the USNS Contender, she was the second of eighteen ocean surveillance ships built for the United States Navy. She was commissioned in the Naval auxiliary force on 29 July 1984. During her career, Contender served almost exclusively in the Pacific Ocean. When on deployment, she motored around the Pacific Basin at speeds of only 2-3 knots, while towing a 2000' acoustical array listening for submarines. She carried no armament and was considered a non-combatant. In her capacity as a training vessel, she fulfills two primary missions: ship familiarization and shiphandling.

USCGC Cleat - 65' US Coast Guard Cutter
The Coast Guard Cutter Cleat is the newest of the fleet of small ice-breaking tugboats in service for the Coast Guard. The Western Boat Building Corporation in Tacoma, Washington built the Cleat which was launched in 1967. From the time of its launch until 1988, the ship was based at Gloucester City, New Jersey. When the Coast Guard moved its Delaware River Base to the foot of Washington Street in South Philadelphia, the Cleat moved as well.

LibertadLibertad - 301' Argentine Navy tall ship
The Argentinia Navy training ship Libertad is one of the largest sailing ships in the world. Her long bowsprit allows the rigging of four jibs as well as the storm jib, whose rope is secured on the bridge. She was built to replace the Presidente Sarmiento, an 85-meter, three-masted square-rigger, which was launched in 1898 in Great Britain, laid up in 1954 and turned into a museum in Buenos Aires. The Libertad was put into service in 1960. She was built for the training of Argentinian Navy officers. Once a year, after their four years at the Naval Academy, she takes the midshipmen on a cruise.

Martha Lewis - 70' Skipjack from Havre De Grace, MD
The Martha Lewis is a working oyster dredger, an alluring and practical classroom for studying the Bay. She is based in Havre de Grace, MD. Her group's basic aim is to cling to a manner of living, the harvesting of oysters, but a broader goal is to provide a wide-ranging education opportunity, to acquaint many with the needs and means to preserve the Chesapeake Bay.

Independiente - 325' Colombian Navy frigate
The Independiente is a Colombian Type FS 1500 frigate of 1500 tons displacement, launched in 1983. She is powered by four MTU 20V 1163 TB92 diesel engines of 28000 hp providing a top speed of 27 knots and a range of 11200 km. She carries a crew of 94 and is armed with eight Aerospatiale MM 40 Exocet ship-to-ship missiles; one OTO Melara 76 mm/62 compact gun; two Breda 40 mm/70 (twin) anti-aircraft guns; four Oerlikon 30 mm/75 Mk 74 (in two twin arrangements) guns; six 324 mm Mk 32 (in two triple arrangements) torpedo tubes and carries one MBB BO 105 CB helicopter for anti-submarine warfare.

Nathan of Dorchester - 65' Maryland Skipjack
The Skipjack, Nathan of Dorchester, was built in Cambridge, Maryland by local volunteers under the direction of Master Shipwright Bobby Ruark. Three years in the making, she was launched July 4th 1994. Skipjacks, designed for dredging oysters on Chesapeake Bay, comprise the last commercial sailing fleet in the USA. The Nathan, combining native oak and pine with galvanized steel, was designed to teach history and aquatic sciences while touring the Choptank River.

USCGC Block Island - 110' US Coast Guard patrol boat
The United States Coast Guard Cutter Block Island is the forty-fourth Island Class cutter, and is named after Block Island, RI, which is located 15 nautical miles south of Newport, RI. Cutter Block Island was built by Bollinger Machine Shop and Shipyard in Lockport, LA, and is outfitted with state of the art machinery and electronics. The cutter design is based on the internationally known Vosper Thornycraft Patrol Boats of Great Britain. Twin V-16 Caterpillar diesel engines move the ship at speeds in excess of 29 knots. Designed as a high speed heavy weather craft, the Block Island also employs active fin roll stabilizers to minimize ship motion and reduce crew fatigue. She is startioned at Base Fort Macon, GA.

13th Annual Great Chesepeake Bay Schooner Race* (from Baltimore to Norfolk/Portsmouth)- sponsored by Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race Committee. This annual race's mission is to promote public awareness of the Chesapeake Bay's maritime heritage and to encourage the preservation and improvement of the Chesapeake's natural resources. Race's proceeds benefit the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
