Dear Neighbor,

Alex. Brown
Alex. Brown

When Alexander Brown came to America from Ireland in 1800, he was drawn to Baltimore by the promise of economic opportunity. Beginning his career as a linen merchant, he built swift Baltimore Clipper ships that revolutionized commerce on both sides of the Atlantic.

In recognition of our long maritime history, Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown is the presenting sponsor of OpSail Baltimore 2000 - a gift to Baltimore in honor of the 200th anniversary of the founding of Alexander Brown's firm. As we celebrate our bicentennial year, we give thanks to the people and the communities who have made our success possible.

As the company that long ago financed the first railroads to crisscross the country, and more recently financed the Internet that today spans the globe, Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown has continually sought opportunities to open new doors.

It will be with great pride that we stand with you and your family to welcome tall ships from around the world to Baltimore's harbor.

Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown, the presenting sponsor of OpSail Baltimore 2000, has launched a "Red Carpet Campaign" to put Baltimore's best foot forward during the festivities, June 23-29th. The firm is planting red flowers throughout Baltimore's Inner Harbor and the central business district to create a highly visible, welcoming environment for visitors from across the state, the country, and the world.

The Red Carpet Campaign, a gift to Baltimore in honor of the 200th anniversary of the founding of Alexander Brown's firm, consists of multiple red flower beds, a new public garden south of the Light Street Pavilion, 150 new sidewalk planters, and 88 hanging red flower baskets in Baltimore's Inner Harbor and central business district. The color red was chosen for the project to reflect the historic red Alex. Brown flag that flew above downtown Baltimore for eight generations.

"As an international organization with strong local roots, our company is proud to help Baltimore enhance its stature as an international city," notes Mayo A. Shattuck III, co-chairman of Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown and co-head of Global Investment Banking of Deutsche Bank. "With the June arrival of tall ships and thousands of spectators, this beautification campaign is our way of signaling that Baltimore welcomes the world and global opportunities."
